Up Stream | 08:14AM Jul 07, 2007

I figured a bit of a break from the church was needed both for your sake as well as mine. I often find that when I edit a series of photos I end up editing each photo in a similar manner, as opposed to coming at each image differently, which is what I need to do. Luckily, the best thing to do is simply take a break. Which, is what we see tonight, a different subject and an equally different process.

I came upon this shot while crossing over a bridge on the road to Parsonsfield. As if often the case a simple glance can lead to a most intriguing photo opportunity. These particular white water adventurers were taking practice runs on a relatively small stretch of rapids that lie beneath the bridge. From what I was able to gather, it was the young lady in the canoe’s first time out for the season. The other two, which sat in kayaks, seemed to be teaching the youngster the tricks to taking her canoe up stream.

My goal for this shot was to create a feeling of tension, drama almost in a situation that in fact really didn’t hold much tension at all. My technique, in this case, was to use both a low shooting angle to accentuate what little rapids there were, as well as a faster shutter speed to freeze action. Though it by no means puts you on the edge of your seat, I still feel that by timing my capture for peak action there is a certainly a feeling of tension here. But hey, what do I know right? Your feedback, as always, is welcome!
