This shot was taken during my favorite time of day, the hour after the sun sinks below the horizon. It is a magical time of day. The light paints the landscape softly, using muted colors and gentle brush strokes. Shadows grow and texture comes alive, all as the world prepares itself for long nights rest.
This photographic came out of a late afternoon stroll on the beach with a good friend. It is amazing sometimes the connection your emotional state has on your shooting style. I find that my style changes not only with my mood but also with my company.
This afternoon was particularly peaceful, exactly what I needed after a long week at work. I was finally able to shed my worries and just explore the visual playground the beach offered up.
There really is nothing like a walk on the beach to clear your mind, especially for a photographer. The shells, sand, and driftwood all melding together, their myriad textures combining to create a wonderland of photographic delight. The water, though cold, was still warm enough to allow a quick knee-deep dip, which I find is always good for the soul.
Overall it was a great night, both photographically and spiritually. Make sure to stay tuned for more beach shots in the upcoming days.
P.S. – Processing here is as straightforward as I have done in a long time. I applied only a global curves adjustment layer to boost contrast. Other than that, you’re looking at the out of camera image. Crazy for me, I know.
