The Back Door | 04:33AM Sep 12, 2007

Oh the things you find while wandering the back alleys of a small city. See, ordinarily wandering the back alleys of any city at odd hours of the morning would be considered risky at the very least. But, see this is Maine, and well even our criminals need to get up early for work in the morning.

Ryan and I found this artistic excuse for a back door behind a local nightclub called the Asylum, keep our cities miniature scale in mind when I say “nightclub.” Not to mention it’s called the Asylum.

In any event, I snapped off a bracketed exposure knowing that I very well might be tossing this little treasure through Photomatix. Sure enough, those three exposures came in handy. After all I was shooting in almost complete darkness behind a brick building at roughly two o’clock in the morning. Can’t imagine why my exposures might be a bit on the dark side. But, hey who doesn’t love that horrendously ghastly glow put off by an overhead street light? To correct for the colorcast created by our glowing friend there, I used curves to color correct, as well as bringing down the saturation of the entire image.

Thanks once again to my good friend Ryan Polhemus for dragging me all over the city at ungodly hours of the morning. I have to give it to him. Many of my best shots have come after the city goes to sleep. Including this shot, which I personally think is pretty damn cool.
