Before I begin, I would like to express my sincere apologies for the lack of new images over the past few days. Life’s events have, as they often do, gotten the better of me. But never fear: I’m back. Full of new images and exciting stories to share.
Tonight’s riveting post is no exception. The story begins at roughly 9 p.m as Ryan and I head off into the night for another late round of photo exploration. After stopping at a few spots along the coast we decided to meander through South Portland on our way home.
Seeing the wonderful moonrise over the bay I decided it would be worthwhile to stop at a favorite location of mine, Bug Light, a small but elegant lighthouse on the campus of Southern Maine Community College. Upon arrival at our stout, blinking little friend, my colleague and I noticed several flashing blue lights cruising around the harbor. Not thinking much of it, we continued on our path and began to set up for my first shot.
I was just about to snap my first exposure when a mechanical growl caught my ear. The growl quickly became a rumble and pretty soon a full-blown Coast Guard Helicopter was roaring over our heads. I rushed to get my camera in position and squeezed off a shot just as the chopper entered the frame over the lighthouse. I held the shutter as the search team made their way through the frame and past the lighthouse up into the bowels of Portland Harbor.
Not sure what to think, Ryan and I quickly packed up the gear and headed in the direction of the chopper in hopes of finding a clue as to why all of a sudden the harbor was filled with spot lights and search boats.
