round and round we go | 07:53AM Jun 24, 2007

My apologies on not posting last night, I ended up rushing up north for the night. At any rate, tonight we see the photo I had promised.

This shot came to life through pure coincidence. After spending a while wandering up and down the vacant remains of York beach, Ryan and I decided to head down one of the many crowded one way streets that lined the shore. Following our instincts, and trying to avoid the swarms of adolescent girls that seemed to congregate at every corner, we found ourselves quickly at the other end of town. There, much to our surprise we came across our diamond in the proverbial rough.

At the end of town, across from the local fire station sat the unoccupied and alluring York’s Wild Kingdom. For those of you who haven’t graced the shores of Southern Maine, York’s Wild Kingdom is a tiny excuse for a theme park. The rides, which spent most of their lives on the fair circuit, are held together with duct tape and prayers. The games, what little there are, are faded and rusty. However, after hours of crowded clam shacks and cheap hotels, it was paradise.

This shot showcases my favorite portion of the par, the ever-popular bumper cars. Encased in a layer of dust, these blush beauties were calling my name. It was late afternoon, and the light was quickly fading. I knew right off the bat that I wanted this to be an HDR, especially since most of the frame fell in the shadows. I took a total of six exposures, making sure my focal length and aperture remained the same.

Once in the computer I combined those six exposures in Photomatix. After creating one massive HDR file, I brought it into Photoshop for some final edits. For the most part, the only changes that needed to be made were minor color correction and selective curves adjustments. Though, I was pleased with the end result I still felt there was something missing. So, I decided that I better keep with the theme of the series and run it through my cross processing technique. Sure enough, I much prefer the cross-processed image to the original. However, I would interested in hearing your opinion on the matter. I have posted the original over on Flickr to take a gander, click here.

NEWS FLASH: Ryan has started his very own blog. He will be documenting his daily adventures as well as our mutual photo expeditions. Take a look won’t you?
