Red Bull gives you wings | 03:42AM Aug 03, 2007

Hello, and welcome back to Mexico, Maine. Starting point of the 2007 New England Forest Rally.

The beginning stage of the 101-mile race had a most unusual setting, a small playground/recreation area complete with swing sets and dugouts. The course zigzagged in and around various recreation obstacles on its way into the pine forests for which our state is famous.

The main attraction of this stage, however, was the four-foot mound of dirt placed strategically in front of the grandstand. This ominous looking hump of gravel managed to propel each and every competitor well into the air. Though some drivers took the jump with a certain degree of reservation, others were on the throttle the whole way through.

I have to give it to these guys, driving at speeds upwards of 150 miles per hour over roads that most of us wouldn’t hit 20 on, while listening to second by second instructions, and of course lets not forget keeping a vehicle which really never gains a good grip on the road from plunging off a rickety wooden plank bridge or into a grove of pine trees. No offense, Nascar fans, but 500 laps of constantly turning left just doesn’t cut it.
