Ready ... Set ... GO! | 05:36PM Dec 01, 2007

Apologies, to you all for my recent deficiencies in the updating process. I am of the firm opinion that the cold weather, combined with the fact that the sun goes down sometime between 3 and 4 this time of year has really put a damper on my photographic drive.

However, enough excuses! You will be happy to know that bright and early tomorrow morning, Elizabeth and I take off for New York City. That’s right folks, the city that never sleeps and I, with my camera of course, have a date with destiny. So, the good news is, that I shall return with a card full of fresh new images. The bad news is, I will not be updating for the next couple days.

Now that is out of the way, on to the photograph at hand. Above you see an image that was pried from the very bedrock of my archive. I took this guy during my first year of college as part of a studio lighting assignment.

The subject, one Dan Brewer, was a varsity sprinter. As such, I decided to do a sort of in studio sports portrait. I wanted several things out of this shot. The first, of course, was to be able to tell he was a track athlete. His starting block pose pretty much solved that issue. The second, probably more important piece of the puzzle, was that I wanted to bring as much drama to the shot as possible. To accomplish this feat, I used my lights to cast an extremely hard sidelight. I wanted it to appear as if he was sprinting out of darkness.

Very little was done her in post, and in fact, the original images were captured as 35mm slides. So, what little work that was done here was preformed post scan.

Seeing as I have never before shown these images outside of the classroom, I would be very anxious to hear your thoughts. A classroom critique never compares to widespread online exposure!

Step right up, and take a shot!
