There is something so calming about the ocean. Perhaps it’s the constancy of the waves pushing their way on shore, possibly it’s the fresh smell of salt-water, or maybe it has something to do with the moon’s pull on the tides, Whatever it may be, all I know is that no matter how stressful life gets, taking a seat by the ocean never fails to relieve me of my deepest worries.
I often forget how incredibly lucky I am to live so close to such a beautiful coastline. I am grateful, though, that I am able to spend as much time here as I do. Not to mention using it on many an occasion as my photographic muse.
This image is a bit of a throwback for me, returning however briefly to my landscape roots. As it turns out, this image was a real challenge to create. For once, the challenge came hours before the pixels entered the computer. In fact even before they entered the camera.
I was struck, almost immediately upon arriving at this location by two distinct features, the first being the gorgeous late afternoon light that was illuminating the wondrous rock formations. The second was the beautiful patterns and colors, which reveal themselves along the coast with each low tide. Created by miniscule life forms that cling to these tidal rocks, these colorful patterns provided a real compositional challenge. How to frame a shot that adequately represents the truly miraculous conditions that exist here.
I am not sure if I was able to capture exactly what my mind’s eye had in mind, however, after a only minor work in PS I find myself rather pleased with the end result.
Processing here consisted of a combination of two exposures, one for the dramatic and colorful sky, the other for the rich texture and detail in the coastal rocks. I applied careful curves adjustment layers to certain areas of both sky and rock to bring a bit more drama to the scene. Finally, I added a selective color adjustment to ensure that the different exposures were able to maintain a sense of continuity.
As always your questions and comments are welcome.
