Fresh Cut Grass | 10:15AM Aug 23, 2007

We all have memories from childhood, those wonderful little gems that bring on the flood of emotions and recollections from a simpler time. Perhaps it’s the sound of a diving board’s recoil, the warm feeling on your skin on a sunny day, the taste of a crisp soda on your tongue. For me, though, it is the smell of fresh cut grass. I can’t think of one sign of summer’s arrival more wonderful than the aroma of a freshly cut lawn.

The small city of Portland Maine is home to the minor league baseball team the Portland Sea Dogs. The little brother to the Boston Red Sox, the Sea Dogs always draw a big crowd and have a pretty decent sized following of fiercely loyal fans. This shot was taken on their home turf, Hadlock Field, at roughly 12:45 p.m.

Earlier this summer, driving by on my way home one night, I noticed the cleaning crew among the empty seats of the stadium. The light cast down from the immense light pods was surprisingly beautiful, as was the appeal of capturing such a hectic location totally vacant.

To capture the full breadth of the stadium I combined five separate exposures using Photoshop CS3’s much-improved Photomerge tool. To ensure that the shots will come together properly I find the center of my composition and use that frame to figure my overall exposure. The most important thing to remember is that, though the exposure may be different for each frame, keep the exposure the same throughout the entire panoramic.

There was really very little processing here, most likely due to the fact that it is currently 3 in the morning. However, I did throw in a bit of cross processing as a final touch.

Hope you enjoy.
