For Comparison’s Sake | 10:18AM Sep 20, 2007

Jeff brought up a great point in regards to yesterday’s post. He mentioned that yesterday’s image was a great divergence from my HDR work—the work that has been my focus for the past few weeks.

This brought up a point, one that I pondered for quite some time. That point being that I, as a photographer, go through very distinct phases. These phases can last from minutes to months at a time. I usually spend these times dedicating myself to a certain style of work, whether it is using a certain method of composition, a particular post-processing technique, or even a specific piece of equipment.

Whatever the method, I usually practice until I feel I have truly gained an intimate understanding of the technique. By completely immersing myself in a certain aesthetic, I am able to test both my boundaries as a photographer and those of equipment I use.

Each phase, being completely and totally unique, allows me an opportunity to improve both my skills behind the lens as well as in front of the monitor.  In the end, any value that can be given to an experience can be measured by what can be learned. For me, each experience with my camera is a opportunity to learn something new.

Today, for comparison’s sake, I have uploaded both a traditional image as well as an HDR image. They have both been created from the same RAW file, and processed almost exactly the same. However, for me, it provided an excellent opportunity for me to test my newfound skills and abilities.

As always your thoughts are welcomed with open arms, so COMMENT PEOPLE! Thank you and have a nice day.
