Carnival Comes to Town | 06:13AM Sep 25, 2007

I decided to keep the theme of marine transport alive with today’s post, however, in this case I choose a subject that still resides above the surface.

The massive Carnival Victory sits tied up to her berth in Portland’s popular Old Port District. The ship is one of many to count our humble town among its many ports of call. Considering the amount of money these floating cities pour into our economy, Portland has decided to become a bit more accommodating. One such accommodation is nearing completion after several years of planning boards and design meetings. The new construction, an immense terminal, designed especially for large cruise ships now sits mere months away from opening its doors.

Enough small town politics for one evening, let’s get on to the photography, shall we? This shot was taken from a fenced off beach, just in front the new terminal. I had to hop a few fences and climb a few rocks, but I knew the shot I wanted, and I wasn’t going to let a little caution tape stop me.

For composition, no one could have asked for a better location. A beach lined with decrepit pier pilings? Come on what else would a 14mm lens want? Plopping the good ol’ tripod into the tidal wave wash, I composed as wide a shot as possible, making sure to include a quality wave washing up through the foreground pilings.

All in all, I feel this is a pretty unique capture. Cruise ships, though impressive in size, simply aren’t all that photogenic. Though, with the inclusion of some foreground interest and the lovely late afternoon light, I don’t think she looks half bad.

What does everyone want for tomorrow, yes we have options for the first time in a long time. I can either go with another Cruise shot or head back to the beach and our beloved wreck.
