Today, I was working on assignment for Down East Magazine. My assignment: to cover the annual running of the Candy Cane Train. This Christmas themed train begins its hour and half long journey in the City of Ships, Bath, Maine.

The numerous yuletide attractions included, among other things, hot chocolate, fresh cookies, carolers, storytellers, real live elves, and of course a brief visit from the big man himself. As you might imagine, this train full of anxious youngsters was just the thing to put anyone in the Christmas spirit.

One particularly heart warming moment is captured above. Santa, on his way from the back of the train to the front, made a stop at each car to interact with his miniature admirers. When he entered the dining car, however, he was certainly not prepared for the greeting he received. This enthusiastic admirer simply could not hold back his excitement, upon seeing this jolly old fellow. He leapt from his seat, sprinted down the isle, and bounded into St. Nick’s arms.

The joy on his face is undeniable. It is that unquestioning belief exhibited by each and every child that reminds me, every year, what Christmas is really all about.
