Awaiting the faithful | 08:32PM Jul 05, 2007
My sincere apologies for the lapse in posting, however, life’s events have overtaken me this past week. While the time was well spent, I have missed publishing my images for all of you.
With this image we return to Parsonfield, Maine, and the abandoned Union Church. Once again we are inside the main chamber, which by far was my favorite room in the small structure. It was an amazing feeling to walk between the pews, knowing that the last parishioners to sit in these pews left over 30 years ago. I have spent time in many abandoned structures, from mills to houses. Without exception, each one was eerie in its own way, either with creaking wooden floors or simply the absence of any life whatsoever. This church was different though. Not once, during my time inside its ancient walls did I feel that familiar feeling of unease.
This shot was composed to showcase the gorgeous woodwork visible on these antique pews. I am sure this is not the last shot you will see of the main chamber, though I do think it is one of the most descriptive. It includes not only the wonderful pews but the ever-present stained glass as well.
I used HDR to achieve the overall exposure, including the highlights in the windows and the deep tones in the shadows. I put quite a bit of work put into the details not only in the carpet but the walls as well. The only other major work is the saturation which has been lowered a bit to help with mood.
As always, I am very interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas. So, please take a minute and opine.
SIDE NOTE: I wanted to let you all know that part of my time spent this past week was preparing an article for Photoshop User magazine. I was lucky enough to be invited to be a featured photographer in their September issue. The article will focus on my techniques as a street photographer, as well as a brief HDR tutorial. So, if you don’t already have a subscription to this amazing magazine, make sure you stop by the newsstand come September!
