Hello all, and welcome back. A quick update before we delve deep into the wonderful world of photo-graphy. The past two days in Connecticut, though outrageously hot, were well worth the treacherous trip down I-95. I made the journey to visit my 3-week-old baby niece. I will spare you the story, for now. However, make no mistake I spent most of my time behind my lens so be prepared for a sudden onslaught of baby photos. Ok, so maybe not an onslaught, but you get the idea.

Moving on to today’s image. Here we see the second installment of my latest series, the abandoned Union Church in Parsonfield, Maine. Although it may seem to be an ordinary flick, make no mistake this was one of the most treacherous image I have ever taken. The view you see before you is in fact from within the top tier of the steeple that was featured in yesterday’s image. That’s right folks I am standing roughly 30 feet off the ground inside the deteriorating steeple of a 100-year-old church. All in a days work, I say.

Processing this image proved almost as tough as capturing the original exposure. Planning ahead, and not really wanting to re-live the experience, I shot a total of six exposures for this image. My original goal was to process this shot as an HDR. However, for some reason Photomatix decided it didn’t like my exposures, and instead of creating a nice little HDR it mashed them together creating a wonderful mess of colors and shapes. Time to revert to plan B: take two shots (one for the window and one for the interior) and combine them using masks in Photoshop. After some tweaking I am really quite pleased with the end result.
