A duck out of water | 05:34AM Nov 16, 2007

Today, we return to the sands of Higgins Beach in the wake of Tropical Storm Noel. Bess and I had hit the beach that morning in hopes of catching the numerous surfers we knew would be out after Noel’s wake.

Surfers weren’t the only wave hungry athletes that showed up that morning, however. Among the many toting boards were two men carrying white water kayaks. It was the juxtaposition of two kayakers among a sea of prospective surfers that initially drew my lens. However, in the end many of my best shots from that day came from following these two paddlers into the surf.

This shot, was snapped as the two prepared to enter the twelve-foot surf. I was immediately drawn to seeing these boats sitting on the sand. It was much like seeing a beached whale, something so swift and nimble in the water sitting awkward and helpless on the sand. Not long after this shot was taken, however, Steve and Tom pushed their way along the sand and into the approaching tide.

This shot is yet another example of combining an HDR image with a traditional exposure. As you might have guessed the sand and approaching surf are primarily HDR, while the majority of the kayak and its rider remain true to the original exposure. I really think that HDR adds to the detail in the sand, creating a great point of interest.

I also processed this shot both with full saturation and then a second time with lessened saturation. Though, I thought I would enjoy the more saturated version it turned out that I, once again, chose the de-saturated one. Go figure.

I am anxious to hear your opinions on this shot, as well as the combination of HDR and traditional exposures used here.
