I am sure that many of you have pondered the thought of being a millionaire. We all do it, don’t be ashamed, its natural. Perhaps you used your millions to buy foreign sports cars, or luxurious yachts. Maybe you decided to donate your riches to charity, or even to a local organization.
You and I, wish as we might, may never be able to get our hands on that kind of cash. However, allow me to show what Maine’s largest city did with their million-dollar piggy bank. Oh yes, that’s right, we built a bridge. Not just any bridge mind you, oh no, this eight lane, center grated, beauty is one of the tallest drawbridges on the east coast. You know what, for a million dollars, it damn well better be!
Anyways, the “million dollar bridge,” as it is aptly named has been a Portland landmark for quite some time now. So, seeing as I have shot pretty much every other square inch of the city by the bay, I figured capturing this concrete behemoth wouldn’t hurt.
I captured the shot on the right just up the road from where we parked. I was able to gain this angle by shooting from a small park that over looks the suspended asphalt thoroughfare, surprisingly the view wasn’t that bad at all. Which of course worked very much in Ryan’s advantage, considering I was forced to leave his crippled self there, while I set off alone up the South bound break down lane.
After roughly 100 yards I noticed a small sign in the middle of the road, it read, “Pedestrians please use sidewalk.” Hmmm, what a fantastic focal point,” I thought, completely ignoring its obvious and most likely important message, I am a photographer after all, the image always comes first. So there I sat, feet dangling in the passing lane while allowing my 15-second shutter to lapse. It’s an invigorating experience, sitting smack dab in the middle of speeding traffic. Oh, and did I mention I was on a bridge?
